Robert Fulton designed the first steam-powered boat to travel faster than four miles per hour.

Fulton's Nautilus had collapsible sails and masts allowing it to maneuver both on the surface of the water and below.

Although Robert Fulton is generally credited with inventing steamboats, John Fitch, whose sketch and description of a piston for steamboat propulsion is shown here, was making much headway in this area as early as 1785.
